About the guide

The argument guide for animal advocates systematically catalogs every idea used to exploit, harm or kill animals or to avoid helping them, with a thorough explanation of the objections and biases of people who oppose veganism and antispeciesism.

The approach

The guide starts from a sentience-centered position, shows that ideas like reason and justice should not be bent to serve one's own interest and seeks a strong logical and epistemological foundation, as in analytic philosophy.

Health, environmental and economic arguments appear as corrections of fact, not as moral justification: the guide follows the criticism, voiced by many activists, of indirect arguments that steer away from respect for animals (learn why).

What the guide contains

All 151 arguments are catalogued, each with its common wordings and its main flaw. In this English edition, every argument has full chapters, with the short answer, the step-by-step rebuttal, the errors and biases, the consistency tests and the connections to other arguments, are being translated from the Portuguese edition. The guide also includes 53 weak arguments vegans should drop and a section on what goes beyond veganism, based on the book Veganismo Baseado em EvidĂȘncias (Evidence-Based Veganism, in Portuguese).

About the sources

Empirical claims need a source. The links in the references lead to the sources checked while writing. When a table says "source not yet checked", the reference exists but has not yet been verified against the original.

This English edition was translated from the Portuguese original and adapted for an international reader: where an example was specifically Brazilian, an international equivalent with a checked source was used, and Brazilian facts were kept where they are the evidence itself. Sources available only in Portuguese are marked.

About the tone

The guide discusses arguments, not people. It presents the strongest version of each objection and says what it gets right, because only then is the answer worth anything. When it compares the logical structure of arguments, it is not equating victims or historical suffering.
