For the Animals
An Argument Guide
PT

Next time you hear an argument against veganism, remember:

Every objection has an answer.

The argument guide for animal advocates systematically catalogs every idea used to exploit, harm or kill animals or to avoid helping them, with a thorough explanation of the objections and biases of people who oppose veganism and antispeciesism.

Someone said:

"Plants feel too."

No nervous system and no evidence of experience; and if they did feel, animal farming kills more plants

151 arguments

What if the person starts from a political theory?

Liberals, Marxists, anarchists, utilitarians, feminists: each theory has a principle, and none offers, on its own terms, a reason to leave animals out.

Liberalism

"Freedom is a right of rational individuals; animals aren't subjects of liberal rights."

Libertarianism and anarcho-capitalism

"What's mine is mine: animals are property, and the freedom to use property is sacred."

Marxism, socialism and communism

"Exploitation is a relation between human classes. Animals aren't workers, and the struggle is a different one."

Anarchism

"Anarchism fights domination between people; animals are not part of that."

Utilitarianism

"Human pleasures are worth more: better to be a human dissatisfied than a pig satisfied."

Contractualism and Rawlsian justice

"Justice holds among those who have a sense of justice and can make agreements."

Deontology and Kantianism

"Only rational beings are ends in themselves; toward animals we have, at most, indirect duties."

Communitarianism

"Duties arise from the community and its traditions, and animals are not members of it."

Egalitarianism and prioritarianism

"Equality is among human citizens; animals belong to another category."

Ethics of care

"Care applies to close relationships, not to unknown animals."

Virtue ethics

"Virtue is about human character; treating animals well matters only because it makes us better."

Feminism

"Feminism is about women; talking about cows and hens is changing the subject, or even offensive."

Anti-racism, anti-ableism and the fight against other discrimination

"Comparing speciesism to racism or ableism is offensive; they are different things."

The progressive left and multiculturalism

"The animal cause is a white middle-class concern that ends up attacking the cultural practices of minorities."

Pacifism and nonviolence

"Nonviolence is a commitment between people, not to animals."

Effective altruism

"Resources for doing good are limited, and should go to humans first."

Stop saying this, or say it better

The standard applies to both sides. These arguments circulate among vegans and do not survive scrutiny as they are said. Tap one to see how to say it better. Correcting is part of the process, but without losing focus: why.

"Going vegan will make you healthier."Borrowed reason

Say: A well-planned vegan diet is viable. That shows the duty not to harm animals can be met, but the duty comes from them, not from your health.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Veganism would end world hunger."Borrowed reason

Say: Harming sentient beings without necessity is unjust, with or without any effect on hunger.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Go vegan for the planet."Borrowed reason

Say: The environment matters as a means: preserving or changing an ecosystem makes moral sense insofar as it improves the lives of real sentient beings.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Meat eaters are psychopaths."Exaggeration or attack

Say: Point out the inconsistency: the person already cares about some animals, and nothing relevant separates those animals from the ones they eat.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"There's no such thing as an ex-vegan."Exaggeration or attack

Say: Ex-vegans exist, but that says nothing in favor of the position they went back to. Someone ceasing to be an abolitionist doesn't make slavery acceptable.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Using force to protect animals is always wrong."Exaggeration or attack

Say: Separate the cases, because rescue, property damage and violence against people are different things, and ask what each one actually produces, with evidence instead of conviction.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Being vegan is very expensive."Exaggeration or attack

Say: Processed substitutes can be expensive, but the basis of a vegan diet doesn't have to be. Start with beans, rice, grains and vegetables.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Anemia mostly affects meat eaters."Exaggeration or attack

Say: Eating meat doesn't prevent anemia, which is common on every diet. What prevents it is planned eating, with iron sources, vitamin C at meals and tests when needed.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Every nutrition body in the world approves vegan diets for everyone."Exaggeration or attack

Say: Say who says what: bodies such as the US Academy and the British Dietetic Association accept well-planned vegan diets at every stage of life, with B12 and planning; others urge more caution for pregnancy and children. None says you need to eat animals.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Doctors don't know anything about nutrition."Exaggeration or attack

Say: Ask the reason for the advice: which nutrient is missing and whether it can come from another source. If it is a general opinion, compare it with the positions of nutrition bodies and look for a dietitian who knows plant-based diets.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"In India almost everyone is vegan."Exaggeration or attack

Say: In India, about four in ten adults say they are vegetarian, and eight in ten restrict meat in some way. Refusing meat is old and diverse, and it does not belong to one social group.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Each vegan saves 200 animals a year."Exaggeration or attack

Say: Each purchase has a real average effect on production, less than one animal per animal not bought, but more than zero. Over a lifetime of thousands of meals, that adds up to many animals.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Hitler wasn't even really a vegetarian."Exaggeration or attack

Say: Even if he was vegetarian, that would say nothing about veganism, just as his not smoking doesn't make cigarettes good. What matters are the arguments about the animals.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"All animals are slaughtered fully conscious, without stunning."Exaggeration or attack

Say: Say what the law allows and what fails: birds shackled conscious before stunning, a gas that pigs avoid, religious slaughter without stunning, fish almost always killed by suffocation. And even with the best stunning, the animal is still killed.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Jesus was a vegetarian."Exaggeration or attack

Say: What Jesus ate in first-century Galilee doesn't decide what we should do today. Christians follow his values, not his habits, and compassion for the vulnerable is at their center.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Great geniuses like Einstein and Da Vinci were vegan."Exaggeration or attack

Say: What matters are the reasons, not who holds them. If you cite someone, cite the argument: Plutarch wrote against eating meat, and many contemporary philosophers defend vegetarianism or veganism as an ethical position.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"God didn't make animals for humans."Wrong criterion

Say: Use a reason anyone can evaluate, whatever their faith: the animal can be harmed, and that harm needs a justification.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"We should love animals."Wrong criterion

Say: You don't have to like cows to stop paying for their deaths. The question is justice, not affection. When someone does love an animal, it's worth pointing out the inconsistency, but rest the conclusion on what holds for everyone: what relevant difference is there between a dog and a pig, if both can suffer?

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Humans come first."Wrong criterion

Say: Similar harms deserve similar weight. Causes can have different priorities because of the number of victims, neglect and tractability, not because of species.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"I'm vegan out of compassion for all living beings."Wrong criterion

Say: Say "sentient beings": those who can feel and be harmed by what we do.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Pigs are smarter than a three-year-old child."Wrong criterion

Say: Pigs have real cognitive and social abilities, but what matters is that they feel pain, fear and pleasure. That holds for the pig, the chicken and the fish, however intelligent they are.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Comparing it to slavery pushes people away."Objection in disguise

Say: Say what your real objection is. If it's moral, defend it as moral. If it's strategic, show the evidence.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Don't show the footage; it's too shocking."Objection in disguise

Say: Ask which approach reduces the most suffering, not which is most comfortable to defend.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"This partial law is unfair to the other animals."Objection in disguise

Say: Judge each law by what it causes over time. The abolition-versus-reform debate is real, but it is empirical and needs evidence case by case.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Not your mom, not your milk."A fact with no moral weight

Say: Talk about who pays the price: the cow has to be made pregnant to produce, the male calves are discarded and the cows are slaughtered when production drops.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Eggs are chicken periods."A fact with no moral weight

Say: Talk about what happens to the birds: the male chicks are discarded and the hens are slaughtered when production drops.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"No adult animal drinks milk."A fact with no moral weight

Say: Talk about production: repeated pregnancies, separation of calves and slaughter of cows when production drops. That is what makes milk a moral problem.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Meat eaters eat more soy than vegans."A fact with no moral weight

Say: For the fear of hormones, cite the studies in humans. For deforestation, yes, point out that most soy feeds animals.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Cats can't be vegan."Weak or false science

Say: The evidence suggests cats can live well on complete vegan foods, carefully formulated and with veterinary follow-up. Where that still falls short, the answer is to develop better foods, not to give up on the animals that become cat food.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Humans are biologically herbivores."Weak or false science

Say: Even if we were great at digesting meat, that wouldn't tell us whether it's right. We can live well without it, and that's the information that matters.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Vegans are sexier and better in bed."Weak or false science

Say: Talk about who is harmed. Being vegan isn't a beauty program.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Broccoli and spinach have more protein than meat."Weak or false science

Say: Good plant sources exist: beans, lentils, chickpeas and soy. Always compare grams of protein per 100 g of food.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Vegans don't need to supplement B12."Weak or false science

Say: Anyone who doesn't eat animal products needs a reliable source of B12, such as a supplement or fortified food, ideally with professional guidance. Needing a supplement doesn't make the diet invalid.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Gorillas, bulls and horses get strong eating only plants."Weak or false science

Say: Use evidence about humans: well-planned plant-based diets provide the protein we need, and there are top athletes who don't eat animals. And remember that the main question is moral, not nutritional.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"All the B12 in meat comes from supplements."Weak or false science

Say: B12 is made by bacteria, not by animals. Taking a supplement just gets the same vitamin without the middleman.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Livestock pollutes more than all cars, planes and ships combined."Weak or false science

Say: Use comparable figures: livestock accounts for between 12% and 14.5% of human emissions, according to the FAO, and animal-based foods for about 57% of food production emissions. That is already a lot, without a mistaken comparison.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Livestock causes 51% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions."Weak or false science

Say: Say that livestock accounts for between 12% and 14.5% of human emissions and about 40% of human-caused methane, together with the rest of agriculture. These are accepted figures, and they are enough.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Animal testing is useless: 90% of drugs fail."Weak or false science

Say: Animal tests have serious limits and are no longer required for every drug in the US. But the main question is a different one: a benefit doesn't justify using those who cannot consent, and we don't accept that with humans.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Unseasoned meat tastes of nothing; all the flavor comes from seasoning."Weak or false science

Say: Much of the flavor we associate with meat comes from preparation and seasoning, and that can be applied to plants. And even if meat tasted better, the pleasure of a meal wouldn't justify an animal's life.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"It's proven that vegans are more empathetic."Weak or false science

Say: Say that caring for animals doesn't reduce care for people: empathy isn't zero-sum, and many animal advocates also work for human causes.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Koko the gorilla held conversations in sign language."Weak or false science

Say: Animal communication is rich, and pain can be measured without words, through facial expressions and behavior. You don't have to speak to suffer, just like a baby or a person who has lost speech.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"It's proven that meat played no role in human evolution."Weak or false science

Say: The exact role of meat in evolution is debated, and cooking food, including plants, is another strong explanation. But the main point is different: what helped our ancestors survive doesn't tell us what to do today, with alternatives.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Science proves veganism is right."Weak or false science

Say: Science shows that animals feel and that we can live well without exploiting them. Ethics, with its own methods, shows that causing unnecessary suffering is wrong, a principle almost everyone already accepts. It's the combination of the two that supports veganism.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Oysters and mussels feel pain like any other animal."Weak or false science

Say: Maybe oysters and mussels don't feel, and the doubt justifies caution. But anyone who accepts this argument accepts that sentience is the criterion, and that criterion condemns eating the animals that do feel.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Cultivated meat isn't vegan, because it comes from animals."Purity and invented rules

Say: There's a real risk that the technology becomes a badge of "conscience" without replacing animal farming. That justifies vigilance, not outright rejection.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Food that may contain traces of milk isn't vegan."Purity and invented rules

Say: Check whether there is an animal ingredient and whether the company carries out or sponsors testing or other exploitation.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"A good vegan only eats natural, organic, healthy food."Purity and invented rules

Say: Taking care of your health is great, but it's a different conversation. To be vegan, it's enough not to exploit animals as far as possible.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"On a desert island, I'd starve before eating an animal."Purity and invented rules

Say: Maybe I would eat one, the way a starving person might steal food. That changes nothing in everyday life: none of us is on an island, and the question is what we do when we don't need to.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"I'm vegan, but I taste the food when I visit my family."A concession that empties the point

Say: Decline kindly, without a sermon: "Thanks, I don't eat that, but I love being here." Bringing a dish to share usually makes the conversation easier.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"I'm vegan, but I don't think everyone should be."A concession that empties the point

Say: Anyone who can avoid harming animals has a reason to. I know change takes time, and I'm here to talk, not to judge you.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Being vegan requires being anti-capitalist."The cause as a tool

Say: Defend your political position as a political position, with its own arguments, without presenting it as a condition for defending animals.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"More expensive meat is bad for ordinary people."The cause as a tool

Say: Recognize when two legitimate goals conflict and discuss how to resolve it, instead of pretending the conflict does not exist.

Why this argument is weak β†’
"Veganism is only about animals; nothing else matters."The cause as a tool

Say: Veganism has a focus, and prioritizing it is legitimate. That doesn't oblige anyone to embrace every cause (see V51), but it doesn't free anyone from respecting people either.
