"Jesus was a vegetarian."

Exaggeration or attack

They claim more than the evidence supports, or attack people instead of discussing what they do.

Why it is weak

The Gospels describe Jesus eating and offering fish, and the theories that he was vegetarian, for example through a link with the Essenes, have no solid historical basis.

Answering "Jesus ate fish" with a contested story accepts the other person's ground: that Jesus's diet would settle the question.

How to say it better

What Jesus ate in first-century Galilee doesn't decide what we should do today. Christians follow his values, not his habits, and compassion for the vulnerable is at their center.
