V44
"Oysters and mussels feel pain like any other animal."
Weak or false science
They make claims about the body or nutrition that the evidence does not support. When they fall, they take the speaker's credibility with them.
Why it is weak
The evidence of sentience in bivalves is weak: they have very simple nervous systems with no centralized brain, and even animal advocates admit they may not feel.
Claiming otherwise with certainty contradicts the evidence and weakens the cases where it is strong, like fish, octopuses and crabs.
How to say it better
Maybe oysters and mussels don't feel, and the doubt justifies caution. But anyone who accepts this argument accepts that sentience is the criterion, and that criterion condemns eating the animals that do feel.
