"Being vegan is very expensive."

Exaggeration or attack

They claim more than the evidence supports, or attack people instead of discussing what they do.

Why it is weak

Coming from a vegan, the phrase confirms one of the myths most used against veganism, and pushes away people who might join.

It usually generalizes from specialty products, like vegan cheeses and meats. Beans, rice, grains and vegetables are among the cheapest foods.

The access barrier is real for some people, and it's worth acknowledging. But that's different from saying veganism is expensive by nature.

How to say it better

Processed substitutes can be expensive, but the basis of a vegan diet doesn't have to be. Start with beans, rice, grains and vegetables.
