Exaggeration or attack
They claim more than the evidence supports, or attack people instead of discussing what they do.
Why it is weak
It's inaccurate and counterproductive. Most of these people have genuine emotional bonds.
The problem isn't a lack of emotion. It's an ethical inconsistency that extends respect only to a selected group.
How to say it better
Point out the inconsistency: the person already cares about some animals, and nothing relevant separates those animals from the ones they eat.
