V32

"Broccoli and spinach have more protein than meat."

Weak or false science

They make claims about the body or nutrition that the evidence does not support. When they fall, they take the speaker's credibility with them.

Why it is weak

The confusion comes from charts that count protein per calorie, not per weight. About half of spinach's calories come from protein, but it has very few calories: 100 g provides only about 3 g of protein.

Anyone who repeats this is refuted by a glance at a nutrition table, and their credibility goes with it. Worse, someone might rely on the idea when planning their own diet.

How to say it better

Good plant sources exist: beans, lentils, chickpeas and soy. Always compare grams of protein per 100 g of food.
