Home / Weak arguments / A concession that empties the point
"I'm vegan, but I taste the food when I visit my family."
Said to seem flexible or avoid conflict, they turn a question about victims into a personal preference.
Why it is weak
If the reason not to eat animals is the animal, it doesn't change because the table belongs to your family. For whoever died, the occasion makes no difference.
The phrase also teaches the family that veganism is negotiable: a diet suspended out of politeness, not a position about victims. Anyone who insists has reason to think pressure will work.
This is not a demand for perfection. A mistake, an accident or a hard moment are something else, and veganism speaks of "as far as is possible and practicable". A family visit is uncomfortable, but it rarely makes refusing impossible.
How to say it better
Decline kindly, without a sermon: "Thanks, I don't eat that, but I love being here." Bringing a dish to share usually makes the conversation easier.
